The World is Blue: New video by Dee-1

June 10, 2011

Can’t promote this brother enough, he has a strong message, make sure you listen to it.  This line on the track struck a chord with me:

“All these Black Billionaires, how many hoods benefited dog?”

Pretty raw. Let’s dwell on that for a minute and dig deep. Money.  If you understand how money works, what it represents, you know that money is simply a medium of exchange.  It symbolizes debt. Think about it, money allows you to purchase goods or services, goods or services that were generated (by work) in exchange for money (most cases).  So when we look at certain segments society, Black America in particular, you see a lack of wealth, a lack of money.

But you will sure see a lot of Black celebrities flaunting money, while you will see a lot more Black people struggling. Why is that? What happened to the Social Contract  that Rousseau spoke about, how is it that a few benefit while others suffer, and nobody does anything about it.  When you look at the Black Billionaires, how did they get their wealth? Would they have their wealth absent the “hoods” support?  Does this dynamic benefit Black America or harm it?

This is beyond Black and White, if you look at the globe, the majority of people are suffering while a very small portion benefit. Where do you fit in that equation? Are you struggling to get a piece of the imaginary pie, while your fellow man squirms in a cesspool that is the “hard knock life”? Are you willing to step on someone’s neck to get that almighty dollar? Or as the line suggests, once you obtain that wealth are you willing to turn your back on those that supported you from day one?

RIP JONAS.

June 3, 2011

Jonas Bevacqua was  a legend in the street apparel game. He rose to meteoric heights in such a short time span; his brand LRG is now cemented as a pop culture staple. He definitely inspired me to continue pursuing my brand, and demonstrated that a lot can happen in a short period of time with hard work and dedication. ATCM salutes the fallen innovator. Jonas died Monday evening at the age of 33. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.  See http://www.shop-eat-surf.com/news-item/2744/bevacqua-autopsy-inconclusive/-.

Art Whino’s G40 Summit: Raw Art

May 26, 2011

Down near U St., Vitamin Water is sponsoring Art Whino’s G 40 Summit.  Here’s a brief synopsis of the show from artwhino.com:

“Art Whino returns in 2011 for the second edition of G40. The first G40 art summit in 2010 compounded artistically explosive cultures from all over the world and brought them to the DC metro area. By bringing all of these cultures from throughout the world to one place it allowed the visitor to be fully immersed in over 2000 works by 500 artists organized by floors corresponding to their cultural hubs.

This year G40 explores not cultures but the genres which are on the forefront of creative transitions and growing in large scale with hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the world. Some of these genres include Customized collectibles, Skateboard Art, Stencil, Wheat Paste and 3D Installations.

The G40 Art Summit is a unprecedented experience in the art world with its scale and caliber of artists from around the world. This year the summit comes to the city next to the U street corridor taking over an entire 25,000 sqft building and showcasing art on all of it 4 floors.  From over twenty artists showcasing 16’ Murals to traditionally displayed artwork the summit will definitely have sensory overload requiring multiple trips to take in all the treats for the eyes.”

Here are a few pieces that I found interesting:

Ode to the Crunk Era

May 20, 2011

The South has dominated the hip-hop scene for quite some time (it’s still debatable as far as which region holds the crown now, I’d argue that we are in a transition stage).  It probably started round 2002-03 with Lil Jon’s second album “Kings of Crunk” when that Ying Yang single “get low” dropped. From windows, to the walls, til the sweat drips down my balls. So eloquent.  That song made my senior year spring break trip the rich experience it was.  So here is a toast to the Crunk Era with my favorite track from the genre.

Dee-1 x ATCM= Raw

May 6, 2011

It’s his turn. Dee-1 has a buzz like a bumble bee hive, stop and listen.

You’ve already seen him in XXL, all over the hip-hop blogs (2dopeboyz etc.), MTV Jams (2 videos in rotation- Jay, 50, Weezy and It’s my turn).  Good music, check out his mixtape that dropped back in March, “I hope they hear me vol.2,” and believe me bro, they hear you!

Check Dee-1 rocking the limited edition No-Posers design. No posers. None allowed, none at all. We appreciate the support bro!
